The Meaning of “Mowlawi” in Narāghi’s Masnavi-ye Tāghdis
Abstract:   (906 Views)
Expressing deep censure against Mowlawi in a part of Narāghi’s Masnavi-ye Tāghdis raises the question that who is he addressing? Whether he means a specific person or he just intends its terminological meaning. Some suppose that his purpose is Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Balkhī. Lots of similarities between masnavi-ye Taghdis and masnavi-ye ma’navi, Narāghi’s specific attention to Mowlānā, and the use of the title Mowlawi for him bring about such interpretation which not only makes them as opponents but also, bearing in mind Narāghi as a the top ranked shia jurist, suggests the opposition between shia jurisprudence and Sufism. Therefore it is necessary to carry out a study on this topic. This article shows that the term mowlawi in Narāghi’s works does not refer to Jalāl ad-Dīn Rumi or any other individual, but rather indicates its terminological meaning i.e. functionless theologians or hypocrite clergymen. The use of the term “Mowlawi” in the same meaning in the other parts of Narāghi’s Masnavi-ye Tāghdis and in the writings of other mystics and scholars, as well as deep reverence he holds for Mowlānā Jalāl ad-Dīn Rumī in his other works support the above thesis. Moreover, taking into account Narāghi’s liberality and mystical taste on one hand and his progress in mysticism on the other hand, religious sectarianism and Narāghi’s anti-sufi sentiments do not suffice to refer the term to Rumi. Thus the term Mowlawi in Narāghi’s works stands for its terminological meaning not Jalāl ad-Dīn Rumi or anyone else.
