Sepehr-e Kashani and the Characteristics of His Poetry

Abstract

Sepehr-e Kashani (A.H. 1216 - 1269) is one of the famous poets and writers of Qajar time and one of the poets who adopted the style of the classical poets. This article is an attempt to introduce this poet and his poetical style, and is divided into two sections. The first sections investigates Sepehr’s personal life, including the place of his birth, his education, his poetry, and the kinds of knowledge he acquired in Kashan. Moreover, the development of his poetic art and his association with the court of Mahmood Mirza (the Son of Fath Ali Shah) and Nasir al-Din Shah have been discussed and a brief analysis of his verse and prose, especially his Divan of Odes entitled Mahmood al-Qasaed is given at the end of this section. In the second section, the importance of Sepehr’s poetry and his poetical merits are examined. Next, the style of classical poets is introduced, and Sepehr’s special style on poetry, a large quantity of his poems, the manner of his imitation of others, and his status as a poet are discussed. In this regard, some suitable verses which represent his personal style and his poetical power are selected from his Divan , Mahmood al-Qasaed.
