Ali Maryam and the Amin al-Dowleh Timcheh: A Misattribution

Abstract
One of the important Qajar-period buildings in Kashan is Amin al-Dowleh Timcheh, for which, as is the case with many other buildings, there is no reliable and definitive information concerning its architect. Given the widespread circulation of the incorrect claim attributing the construction of this building to Muhammad Ali, a Kashani architect known as Ali Maryam, and its extensive dissemination across various websites, social media platforms, and even some scholarly writings, it was necessary to develop a coherent and well-documented text to correct this misconception and critically evaluate the aforementioned attribution based on the available evidence. To this end, the present article, adopting an analytical approach and drawing upon documentary and field sources—including interviews with experts and relevant individuals, among them the first person to put forward this claim—along with an examination of the historical and chronological feasibility of the attribution through evidence such as the inscription on his gravestone and an assessment of the architectural quality of buildings attributed to Ali Maryam, arrives at the conclusion that Ali Maryam was one of Kashan’s architects and that he was responsible for the construction of several relatively unremarkable buildings. However, attributing the construction of the Amin al-Dowleh Timcheh and Kashan’s well-known historic houses to him is untenable, both in terms of chronology and in light of the extent of his architectural capabilities. Nevertheless, it is possible that, during his adolescence or youth, he participated in the construction of Amin al-Dowleh Timcheh as a laborer or assistant to the master builder. At the same time, the claim that the building was constructed by Ramadan Ali Tupchi, another Kashani architect, warrants further investigation.
