Although rooted in the realm of Ashura, Ta'zieh (a traditional Iranian passion play) has, through the influence of popular culture and literature, and by utilizing the diverse styles of versifiers and the tastes and demands of society, transcended its historical form and ventured into numerous fields and subjects including history, religion, culture, mythology, mysticism, and more. Consequently, the number of Ta'zieh scripts and performances has grown to several hundred. Among the themes of this popular art form is the narration of the lives of Imamzadeh (descendants of the Imams) in various regions of Iran. In this regard, Imamzadeh Sultan Ali ibn Muhammad Baqir (AS), buried in Ardehal, Kashan, is the most important Imamzadeh in this region and among those revered and respected by both the elite and the common people in Iran. This paper examines the "Ta'zieh script of Sultan Ali (AS)," composed by "Mir Azai Kashani," the special sanctity of the land of "Ardehal," the similarities between the event of "Ardehal" and the event of "Ashura," the textual analysis of the "Ta'zieh script of Sultan Ali," and certain characteristics of this Ta'zieh, and strives to demonstrate the reasons for the connection and dependence of the Sultan Ali Ta'zieh narrative on Iranian and mythological motifs.
Keywords: Ta'zieh, popular literature, Imamzadeh.
