Understanding and revision of the technical aspects of lustre inscription - Kashan 12th-13thc Outline: The clay tile remains from mid century, have been named “Kaashi” after the city that they originated from; Kashan. The lustre version of these works have been famous outside the area and are known by reputation as mentioned in written texts available. The aim of this paper is to explain and cover the reason for this status. Also to consider and show the intricacies of the tilework and construction and installation of the lustre tiles in detail. The method used in constructing the lustre tiles used in the alters during the 12th and 13th AD also to show how to examine this in a scientifically formulated methods. With the progress in civilisation in Iran one can see the gradual replacement of metal and glass with the older clay. Based on evidence presented in this work one can draw the conclusion that the writing on the tiles were done completely in a different method from the making the tile itself. In truth the art work depicted on the tiles has a separate function and method altogether compared with the making and transforming the clay into the end result which is called lustre. Also is worth mentioning that construction in great scale like large alters made with these tiles in spite of the Mongol invasion, shows the ability and the skill used by these artisans; based on the written evidence available from the House of Kashan, it was confirmed that these works were not reproduced in the following century.
This paper delves into new findings and considers all the technical evidence available to dig deeper into historical facts and attempts are made to re-create the work based on how it would have been.
