Shah Suleiman Safavi, who initially ascended the throne as Shah Safi II, later reigned under the name Suleiman—a rare occurrence reflected in both historical sources and artistic productions. His coronation, beyond its political significance, is depicted in historical texts as well as in works such as the exquisite gold-wrapped textile attributed to Kashan. This study aims to investigate how this event is represented in the textile alongside contemporary historical accounts. The primary research question is: what are the points of convergence and divergence between visual and textual narratives of this event? Using a qualitative, descriptive–analytical, and historical approach, and employing a comparative synchronic method, this research examines and analyzes the Shah Suleiman coronation textile in parallel with the historical texts of the same period. Findings indicate that both sources share symbolic and key elements, such as the emphasis on the king’s position as God’s representative and the legitimization of his rule. However, notable differences emerge, largely due to the distinct objectives and expressive methods of each medium; the textile emphasizes visual and symbolic aspects, while historical texts provide detailed accounts of political and social contexts. Overall, this comparison demonstrates that woven art in the Safavid period, in addition to its decorative function, played an active role in representing and reinforcing political authority.
