This article asks what the published records of the Kashan Chamber of Commerce reveal about the economic organization of the city’s bazaar and its dealings with the state from 1334 to 1343 SH (1955/56–1964/65). Its primary source is the first volume of Documents of the Kashan Chamber of Commerce. Historical and textual analysis focuses on sarays, commodities, trading houses, individuals, tax petitions, and chamber meetings. The records show sarays as the main addresses of the bazaar’s formal trading-house sector. Some appear chiefly with one or a few related goods, while Gomrok and Qomiha show greater variety; the evidence does not support a rigid map of single-commodity specialization. Carpets appear alongside wool, silk, cotton, yarn, and cloth, but the documents do not establish direct ties between particular merchants, factories, workshops, or weavers. Disputes over taxes on bills and bank promissory notes in 1337, tax assessment and collection in 1339, and recession and tax pressure in 1342 show the chamber receiving, formulating, and forwarding complaints to local and central authorities. The occupational-classification petition of warp and yarn sellers was distinct from the broader merchants’ protest of Aban 1339. In 1342 the Ministry of Finance reported that it had instructed the Kashan tax office to ease collection, although the records do not show whether the order was implemented. The documents thus reveal the bazaar’s continuing commercial and intermediary functions alongside modern industry and the chamber’s limited role in conveying claims to the state.
