Tepe Sialk, located in the northern part of the Central Iranian Plateau, is regarded as one of the five key archaeological sites in Iran. The site comprises two principal mounds, Sialk North and Sialk South, whose cultural sequence spans a long chronological period, extending from the beginning of the sixth millennium BCE to the Achaemenid period. Focusing on the nature and functional attributes of the tools represented in the assemblage, this study examines, identifies, and classifies the stone tools associated with Iron Age metalworking at Tepe Sialk.
The assemblage under study consists of hammers, anvils, abrasive and polishing stones, and a number of tools whose functions remain uncertain. A technical and morphological record was prepared for each artifact, after which the tools were classified on the basis of their morphological characteristics, functional traces, and comparisons with comparable metalworking tools from other archaeological sites. On this basis, the assemblage was divided into four principal categories: hammers, anvils, abrasive tools, and composite tools.
The results demonstrate that Iron Age metalworkers at Sialk employed a specialized and diverse range of stone tools, reflecting a substantial body of technical knowledge, an organized system of production, and the continuity of established metalworking traditions at the site. The evidence further indicates the continuity and dynamism of metalworking activities at Sialk throughout the Iron Age, underscoring the site's significance as an important center of metal production and metallurgical technology on the Central Iranian Plateau.
